Sermon Outline
BIG IDEA: God’s amazing grace and mercy are available even when we blow it big time.
1. God graciously and mercifully Got Jonah’s attention (Read 1-6a).
- Jonah Recognized God’s sovereignty in his situation (3a):
- We can run, but we can’t hide
2. God graciously and mercifully lets Jonah experience desperation. (3b, 5-6a)
- Jonah realizes God was giving him what he wanted! (v.4a) (Proverbs 1:20 ff)
APPLICATION QUESTION #1: WHERE IN YOUR LIFE MIGHT YOU BE RUNNING FROM GOD?
APPLICATION QUESTION #2: What will God have to do to get your attention?
3. God graciously and mercifully rescues Jonah (V. 6b-7).
4. God graciously and mercifully gives Jonah a revived heart. (v.8-9)
- He now laments over those who don’t worship God (v.8)
- He thankfully recommits his life to God (v.9)
- He now realizes that salvation is God’s work, and it is God’s to give (v.9)
APPLICATION QUESTION #3: Do you need to refresh your heart of gratitude and
commitment to God?
5. God graciously, mercifully, gives Jonah another chance (v.10) (1 Jn. 1:9,
Ps. 25:8)
