Sermon Outline
Are we living in the end times?
Just as the fig tree had the appearance of fruitfulness, but bore no fruit, the same was true of the temple and its religious system.
Mark 13 is not primarily to provide a timetable or blueprint for the future so much as to exhort readers to faithful discipleship in the present. - James R. Edwards, The Gospel According to Mark, 384.
How should we be living until Jesus returns?
Disciples must be VIGILANT until Jesus returns!
- In the midst of trials and adversity (5-13)
- In the midst of tribulation (14-23)
- In awaiting Jesus' triumphal return (24-27)
- In watching and waiting (28-37)
Disciples must be VIGILANT, focusing on faithfulness and watchfulness, rather than events outside of our control.
Act 1:6-8
Implications from the Olivet Discourse (Mark 13)
- The time leading up to Jesus' return will be increasingly marked by trials, adversity, and tribulation.
- The precise time of Jesus return is unknown and unknowable to us.
- When Jesus comes again, He is coming IN VICTORY, so we must be VIGILANT until He returns
