By This We Know

Preacher: Jason Zimpfer Series: That You May Know Topic: UPCC Scripture: 1 John 3:19–24

Listen to sermon here.

Sermon Outline

What is “this” and what can we “know” by it?

  • Context in 1 John 3 (v. 10, 11, 16):  “this” refers to loving the brothers
  • Loving the brothers is a constant theme in this letter
  • “This” in verse 19 is referring to v.18: loving the brothers “in deed and in truth”
  • And by “this” we know that we are OF THE TRUTH

When our trust is in Jesus and we love our brothers and sisters in the faith:

  • We know we are of the truth
  • Our heart does not condemn us
  • So we can approach God with confidence
  • And receive the things we ask for
  • As we abide in God
  • Knowing He abides in us through His Spirit

We know we are of the truth…(v19)

  • “Of the truth” (1 Tim. 2:4, 2 Tim. 2:25; Col. 1:5; 1 John 2:21; John 18:37)
  • Those who hear and obey the voice of the Savior are of the truth

Our heart does not condemn us…(v20-21)

  • God is greater than our heart, and He knows our heart
  • Our hearts, our consciences, are reassured when we live out our love

So we can approach God with confidence…(v21)

  • A reassured heart allows us to come with boldness and confidence
  • Our confidence is in the Son who gives us access to the Father

And receive the things we ask for…(v22-23)

  • Because we keep His commandments and do what pleases Him
  • And His commandment is to trust in Jesus and love each other

As we abide in God…(v24)

  • Walking in joyful obedience means being “at home” in God’s presence
  • We abide in God as we keep this commandment to trust Jesus and love each other

Knowing He abides in us through His Spirit (v24)

  • The Holy Spirit not only dwells among us but in us!
  • We know we are of the truth by the Spirit of truth whom God has given to us (John 14:15-17)

If your heart is unsteady, trust this promise…loving your brothers and sisters in deed and truth will bring confidence and assurance to your faith, your prayers, and your nearness to the Lord.

How could your decisions and actions be adjusted to demonstrate this kind of family love?
